Today we're celebrating all things summer with a fun, flavorful and healthy cocktail recipe! Since I know, like me, many of you also like to enjoy the occasional adult beverage, I figured we should all have a recipe recipe that's easy to make at home and has some actual nutritional value.
Enter these amazing Watermelon Lime Spritzers!
They're a light, summery and super refreshing drink that uses homemade watermelon juice, lime juice and one of my new fave drinks: hard seltzer.
The seltzer I'm using today is from my friends at White Claw who recently debuted their line of 100% natural hard seltzer.
What I'm really loving about drinking hard seltzer is that I find it's not as strong as a mixed drink, and is the perfect alternative to beer and wine. And it's also gluten-free, low carb and doesn't make you feel super full and bloated.
White Claw comes in three different flavors–natural lime, black cherry and ruby grapefruit–all of which make great mixers but also taste great on their own. They come in convenient 6-pack cases, have only 110 calories and have 5% alcohol.
I know that alcohol and healthy eating don't normally go hand in hand, but I believe that life is all about balance and moderation. Typically when I drink, I reach for the purest options: vodka + soda water or a white wine. But for me, those are both a little strong sometimes, which is why I started drinking hard seltzer. It's the perfect refreshment for those of us who are conscious about what we consume and want something that is pure, natural and free from additives.
It doesn't contain any artificial ingredients, high fructose corn syrup, or crystalline fructose — meaning it's naturally sweetened with fruit and has no weird aftertaste! (I know you know what I'm talking about with some of those other bottled mixers!)
While I do think that White Claw on its own is a great summer drink, I wanted to give you a fun way to change things up. These watermelon lime spritzers use only three ingredients, take less than 5 minutes to make and make a perfect “mixed drink” to serve at a BBQ, bring to the beach or even when you're having girls night.
It starts with the juice which is just watermelon and lime.
To make it, just add cubed watermelon and three peeled limes into your high-powered blender and blend until smooth. Then you're going to want to remove the pulp by straining it through a nut milk bag (or cheesecloth would work too), until you're left with that gorgeous red juice.
(*note: if you have a juicer, you just juice the fruit)
Then you add your seltzer. I went with the natural lime flavor from White Claw because I found the slight citrus flavor really enhanced the sweetness of the watermelon and of course paired perfectly with the lime.
Top it with your watermelon-lime mixture and you're good to go!
What makes this drink “healthy” you might ask? For starters it's made with fresh fruit. Mix in the low alcohol, minimal sugar seltzer, and this is a cocktail that…
- won't send your blood sugar on a roller coaster
- will help keep you hydrated
- won't get you tipsy too quickly, which can be the case with most other mixed drinks (just be mindful to drink responsibly and have water in between your drinks!)
- is naturally gluten-free
Plus it packs well for a picnic, beach day or even post run meet up with friends!
If you're heading out for the day and want to bring a drink with you, these can totally be made ahead of time. The juice will keep in the fridge for 1 – 2 days, so you can just pack up your picnic basket your juice and seltzers and be out the door in a flash.
Hope you enjoy this refreshing healthy cocktail! I'd love to know what you think of this recipe – leave a comment below and let me know if you'd like to see more healthy cocktails like this. And make sure to tag @simplyquinoa + @whiteclaw if you try this recipe!
